This intensive class is designed for actors looking to work on their physical fundamentals. Classes will focus on the works of Tadashi Suzuki, taught by Mark Corkins, and Anne Bogart's Viewpoints, taught by Joshua Pohja. These classes are designed to build an actor's focus, dicipline, spontaneity, and sense of ensemble.
APEX: Suzuki and Viewpoints
WHAT TO EXPECT Actors should come prepared for an intense, physically engaging class. Participants should wear clothing they are comfortable moving in and bring water to each class. Additional readings may be assigned, students should come prepared to discuss at the following session.
No previous Suzuki or Viewpoints experience is required. All participants must be eighteen years of age or older. SCHEDULE AND ATTENDANCE Classes will be held on Monday evenings 3/18-4/22 from 6pm-9pm at the Baumgartner Center for Dance in Milwaukee. Due the ensemble nature of the class, students should make every effort to attend all classes. Students should not have more than one planned absence when registering for this course. Classes will begin promptly at 6pm, we ask all students arrive five minutes before class so that they can prepare, and class can start on time.
If requested 24 hours before the class start date, a full refund will be issued. Once the class has begun all payments are nonrefundable.
PRICING Students can pay their tuition upfront or in installments. Before the first class students must either pay their full tuition or half of their tuition. Students who pay half tuition upfront will be asked to pay the other half before the start of the fourth class.

SCHOLARSHIPS Vanguard is committed to lowering the financial barriers of access to education and has a limited number of free or reduced fee scholarships available. BIPOC, LGBTQ, or low income students can apply for scholarships by writing a short essay (one page or less) describing their artisitc background and why they would like to take the class. Scholarships will be accepted and detriminations will be made on a rolling basis.

JOSHUA POHJA Josh Pohja (Producing Artistic Director, Vanguard Productions) began his education at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (Acting/Directing) where his passion for dance theater blossomed. He then graduated from the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama, during the tenure of the Moscow Art Theatre, Mladen Kieslov, Don Wadsworth, and Victoria Santa Cruz. There he aligned with Anne Bogart and the SITI Company and found a vocabulary for dance theater in Viewpoints, Suzuki and Composition training. After moving to Milwaukee, under the leadership at First Stage Children's Theater JP continued to hone his technique and build his educational career. JP served five years as Milwaukee Repertory Theater’s Education Programs Coordinator and Basic Acting instructor during which he met George Lorimer and Vanguard’s creative alignment began. MARK CORKINS Mark Corkins is an actor and teacher who has been working in the theatre for over 30 years. He first encountered the Suzuki Method of Actor Training at the Professional Theatre Training Program, while earning his MFA from UW-Milwaukee. Upon graduation (and after 3 years of daily training), Mark was invited to join “The Lear Project,” Tadashi Suzuki’s first production using an all-American cast. The Tale of Lear spent 2 years touring the US and Japan, completing its run at the Toga International Theatre Festival.Shortly after, Mark was invited to participate in Mr. Suzuki’s first Master Class for Teachers with the Suzuki Company of Toga (SCOT), where he was sanctioned to teach the Training. He was also fortunate to partake in the founding of SITI Company, helping to create their early iconic production of The Medium. In addition to his acting career, Mark has had the opportunity to teach the Suzuki Method at UConn, Brandeis, UC-San Diego, APT, Cooperative Performance, Milwaukee Rep, and most recently…Vanguard APEX.
